The Yard brings the five-member Le Patin Libre to the Vineyard for their American debut, in what will launch multi-year Yard commitment to this extraordinary Quebecois ensemble of pioneering skaters. After visiting them in Montreal in 2015, Yard Artistic Director David R White said, “This is something extraordinary: a new and exhilarating avenue of skate artistry that is light years away from competition judging and Disney dancing cartoons. Rather than double axels and triple toe loops, the philosophical center of the ensemble’s research is the “glide.” It provides the key to LPL’s fundamental question: What is skating?”
Vertical Influences is a contemporary ice skating double-bill, comprised of two short pieces: Vertical and Influences. Free of the kitsch and sparkles that have come to characterize much of figure skating today, Vertical Influences gleams with novelty.
Influences addresses themes of leadership, rivalry, individualism, bullying, and the potential for harmony within a group. While Influences is watched from the side lines, Vertical brings audience members onto the ice for an up close and personal view: the five members of Le Patin Libre glide and fly through intricate, virtuosic choreography. Together, Vertical and Influences highlight the experience of both individual and group, the joyous rush of the singular self and the undeniable strength of camaraderie.
Developed over the course of two years, Vertical Influences began in a creation residency made possible by the Jerwood Project and Sadler’s Wells theater in London, UK, during which Le Patin Libre worked with dramaturge Ruth Little. The production was completed in September 2014, during a second intensive creation residency with Little.
